December 12th Meeting Notes

Thanks to all who participated in our last EHAT meeting of the year last week! We had a great discussion about survey results and next steps for the environmental health assessment process.

To briefly fill everyone in, the environmental health assessment process will continue into 2008 through a CARE grant from the US EPA. Kat Hall, Environmental Health Program Director at The Lands Council khall@landscouncil.org or 209-2403, will facilitate this process, with help from Program Assistant, Nicole Powell npowell@landscouncil.org or 209-2404.  If you have ideas, questions or concerns about how the process will move forward on our top two priorities: lead and built environment, please contact them. I will be turning over all your contact information to them.

I’ve attached the Dec. 12th meeting notes. For those of you who were unable to attend, you will be receiving a copy of the evaluation form in the mail in the next few days. PLEASE fill it out and mail it back to the Regional Health District. Your feedback is valuable!

I will be emailing out a draft final report by Wednesday of this week. If you would like to provide feedback, please feel free to email me. This report will be shipped out to Lyndia Tye at the Health District by Friday and she will pass it on to DOH, which provided funding for this first year of our process.

Thanks to everyone for all their hard work this year. I will miss seeing you every month!

Nov. 28th Meeting Notes

Thanks to all who participated in our meeting last week, the meetings notes are in an attachment to this post. We got through a lot of material, better understood Spokane County’s environmental health issues, and prioritized those issues and activities that we thought should continue to be worked on in 2008.

In a nutshell, this is where we landed:
After hearing extensive reports on over 9 issues and multiple possible activities, the group decided to select the main areas (issues) we want to put time and energy into and worry about activities later.

Thus, each EHAT member was given two red dots and asked to vote for two of the issues on the board.  The five issues (plus one activity) were those ranked medium to high priority. Here is how the voting worked out:
Other activity (advocate for CO Detectors) – 1 vote; Built Environment – 9 votes; outdoor air quality – 1 vote; mold – 1 vote; dioxins (no votes); lead – 8 votes;

Thus, you can see that the majority of dots fell under the “lead” and “built environment” categories -- these will be the areas to focus on in the upcoming year. However, please note that nothing from the board falls off! The prioritization process and final report give us a better understanding of where the community can focus energy using the CARE grant in the next two years.

We confirmed our LAST meeting date for Wednesday, Dec. 12th from 12noon-1:30pm at the Downtown Spokane Public Library, Room 1A (street level on Main St.). Plan on allowing yourself an extra 5-10 min for parking either in the library garage or next door at Riverpark Square.

Please plan on attending this last meeting of the EHAT. Agenda items will include an evaluation of our process, feedback on the draft report, a discussion about all the survey data that Gina has analyzed, & brainstorming of next steps for 2008.

Thanks to everyone for all their hard work this year!
